There are some who I've gotten in fights with (especially in Chicago). Many, though, were exceedingly polite. Back when I still had a semblance of optimism coursing through my veins, I'd always keep a bunch of single bills in my pocket. Whenever I'd see a begger, I'd give him a dollar or two until I ran out. There were a couple of times when I was told I gave too much because I accidentally pulled out too much. But the experience I'll never forget is when I was chased down a street and told I dropped a few bills from my pocket. I do have many happy memories of Jerusalem and Israel in the fifties/sixties but I am not sure how many would be of interest to a wider public. Still, I will try! I first read this entry on the Times of Israel, but could not comment as all the TOI blog comments require a Facebook account, which I dot not really want to have. The story you share so beautifully moved me to tears. I also loved the descriptions of pre-67 Jerusalem, with the Jordanian soldiers one could spot, etc... Please, write more about your time in Israel during such period. Greetings from a Franco-American Jew living in Houston, Texas...Tanianoreply@blogger.com
