And certainly Platonic love as practiced in Greece and elsewhere was not a Jewish ideal.

JeremyRabbi Jeremy Rosenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12723608669485173271noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6141014.post-71222104584745757682010-06-22T15:44:17.143-04:002010-06-22T15:44:17.143-04:00S.O.:

As nobody has yet said it I'll point ...Jeremy,

As nobody has yet said it I'll point out that both the Greeks (Homer) and the Bible did a very good job writing about love between men. Patroklos and Achilleus, and David and Jonathan. The Iliad describes in great detail for several chapters (16, 17 and 18) the intensity of the relationship. When Achilleus sets out to avenge Patroklos' death by fighting Hector, knowing that his own death will certainly follow, we understand that this ultimate sacrifice makes logical emotional sense. (It's the Mills & Boon of the ancient world.) As for the covenant sworn between David and Jonathan, I'll leave the interpretation to you! If the possible homo-eroticism is put to one side, wouldn't you say that these examples make a strong case for love outside marriage, the kind that's 'more wonderful than the love of women' (or wives)? (2 Samuel 1:26). If that isn't a legitimate reading -- a little learning being a dangerous thing -- I'm still not convinced that the Jonathan position isn't a whole lot preferable to Bathsheba's or that of any of David's other wives. With these kinds of choices, who'd not take 'living in sin' over wedlock? If this sort of reading isn't acceptable then we are back to 'the love that dare not speak it's name' which makes things even more awkward. Over to you!

PS word verification: "undeonan", seems almost meaningful.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6141014.post-31632601466105318672010-06-18T10:58:06.013-04:002010-06-18T10:58:06.013-04:00I often underestimate how little even the most int...I often underestimate how little even the most intellectual intelligent men can completely not understand women at all. It is really hard finding the right partner? Those misunderstandings often end up in breaking up relationships or if it was marriage divorce.

S.O.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6141014.post-33802169467341840062010-06-18T06:19:26.264-04:002010-06-18T06:19:26.264-04:00Leila:

There doesn't seem to be much of a woman's angle, the true eschet chayil probably too busy digging, sewing, cooking, weaving, selling property etc.etc.

Perhaps Jael was right to hammer a peg into Sisera's head - if he was so honourable, why didn't he go to her husband's tent instead of hers?
