On the other hand, in political terms it can be useful to have popular or well connected Jews in high places (think of Queen Esther--the Harem was not a place for nice Jewish girls) and having successful public figures supporting Jewish pride can be beneficial.

Having said that, I resent having people like Woody Allen or Philip Roth, who in no way live a Jewish life or represent Jewish values, constantly referred to as representatives of Jews or Judaism (in the same way that I resent crooked financiers being taken as examples of Jewish life or publicity mad entertainment rabbis as examples of Jewish spirituality).Rabbi Jeremy Rosenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12723608669485173271noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6141014.post-48524668665326485792010-01-05T11:44:25.076-05:002010-01-05T11:44:25.076-05:00Dear Rabbi Rosen,
I fully concur with your views ...Dear Rabbi Rosen,

I fully concur with your views on boxing. However any involvement in secular activity which compromises a Jew as a Jew, for example acting and other forms of entertainment, can also be regarded as a chilil Hashem. As a Rov said in a shiur once, " Anyone who Hashem wants to humiliate turns him into an entertainer". What is your view on other aspects of entertainment or entertainers including, actors, comedians such as Woody Allen or Jackie Mason or Lilly Tomlin or other Jews who represent "us" in these spheres?Sharedworldshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07701013565964529336noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6141014.post-13767535634071188982009-12-20T02:02:58.228-05:002009-12-20T02:02:58.228-05:00I am really pleased that Anon has left this post. ...I am really pleased that Anon has left this post. It just confims how one needs to treat what is written in the press with suspicion. I am delighted to have the record put straight. Of course, it doesn't change my opinion about boxing or mob attitudes in Europe!
JeremyRabbi Jeremy Rosenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12723608669485173271noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6141014.post-48195561338584411342009-12-20T01:48:55.607-05:002009-12-20T01:48:55.607-05:00I attended the Salita fight, and thought I would t...I attended the Salita fight, and thought I would take the opportunity to set the record straight.

There's no doubt that the crowd was overwhelmingly in favour of Amir Kahn, however the Muslim following was small. The audience was largely working class NE England White.

At no point did I or anyone else I spoke to who attended the fight see or hear either directed personally or Salita directed, anything resembling anti-Semitism. There were many Yidden there with beards & kippot who concur.

After the fight, stunned, I went ring side. There were about 30 Pakistani followers dancing, and a further 100 or so Pakistani followers at the top of the stand nearest the ring dancing to a drum beat. The rare Allah hu Akbar was shouted, but I would not deem that anti-Semitic. Had Salita won, I would have been belting out Haveinu Shalom Alekhem!

Later that evening Salita's manager told me that the boxers had to walk to the ring through a narrow aisle and Salita faced verbal abuse at that point & physical contact from Kahn fans. At no point was anti-Semitism sited!

There could be several reasons why Salita lost so dramatically, but blaming anti-Semitism is disingenuous.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6141014.post-42758424678398594052009-12-20T01:42:39.566-05:002009-12-20T01:42:39.566-05:00Anonymous:

It's not just Muslim of course, it is a hooligan element. In the East End, fighting Mosley's supporters and boxing for prize money in pubs was once part of the same, admittedly illegal, picture. My grandfather was one of these boxers.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6141014.post-36849939640751612162009-12-16T16:34:00.856-05:002009-12-16T16:34:00.856-05:00The article in The Forward says that Yuri Foreman&...The article in The Forward says that Yuri Foreman's Judaism is a non-issue for fans. And Salita fought (and won) 31 bouts previously without encountering hatred. It wasn't until he fought abroad that he had this experience.

So I am wondering whether shouting anti-Semitic slurs is not a boxing thing so much as an English/European thing? If so, perhaps it is not his trainers' fault, as it would have been just as unexpected for them, unless they have worked outside of the US before.

(FIRST COMMENT!)sshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03463216380054384880noreply@blogger.com
